Welcome to Self Defense Tips Information Online!

This website is a collaboration of several martial art masters, law enforcement specialist and military experienced professionals that are devoted to combative self protective real word applications and not sport or tradition. It is an effort bringing together the smartest and most practical tactics and concepts for the everyday guy and gal to survive in today's world. This website is an extension of Chuntian Academy International. A 26 year established martial and combat arts research and teaching organization. It is operated by a director that has nearly 40 years of martial arts experience including researching and teaching extensively in both America and Asia. The teacher has completed the whole system of a family Shaolin Wu Xing kung fu under Sammy Cheeks and granted teaching privileges and Master Teacher Status. He also has research and studies in other martial arts (Wing Chun, Karate, Kempo, Iaido etc) He strongly associates with the concepts of Jeet kune Do. The teacher, Matt Plewes, is an American currently teaching and researching martial arts in Japan and Asia and has done so for the last decade with branches in Indonesia and Singapore. He is registered to teach under the Japan Ministry of Justice. He has been featured on SBS Television in Japan. Mr. Plewes also has training and experience in security and in America as an EMT-Ambulance and Private Investigator.

These skills and principles shown on this site are designed for short term training and can be used by most anyone in real life violent encounters. The system has a strong close- range combat kung fu as a base, and anything that we find useful, practical and proven we adopt into the training program. The complete long program is available in Japan, under Mr. Plewes.

Our mottoes are: "Real World Defense for Real World People" & "Don't take a sport to a street fight & don't take a street fight to a sports ring".

- Real world people, as in everyday people and not the huge "Mesomorph - Powerhouse" people that you often see associated with reality based defense schools.

- Ironically, the Power House or the 5% percent of the people that don't really need it so much are what makes up many reality based defense schools.

Real world people, as in the 95% of the people that remain and do need self protection skills, that don't have the size or time to devote full time in combative defense training.

We focus of avoidance and escapes. We focus on violent life threatening encounters, Rapist, murderers, etc. Not bullies, simple fights or sport.
For being attacked, we ultimately condition the mind-body to RUN or if cornered to react automatically, to escape, to induce proper rapid-fire counter attacks if needed and ultimately without thought and to facilitate rapid escape.

We don't square of with or spar our opponents or get into a defensive or submissive mindset.
We condition our mind-body through proper drills, to counter and use the opponents energy against them, to keep a forward momentum into the "safe-zone" behind the attackers energy and to neutralized them and/or facilitate rapid escapes or counter attack and escapes.

We DO NOT teach beginner students the dangerous illusion of self defense through sparring.
That way of training usually only works in the controlled environment of the class or in the confinements of an organized competition, the fantasy of a movie, or the small percentage of people that are highly trained in sparring and have years of experience AND can be assertive and physically aggressive in the face of danger while confident with their skills. A very small percent, like professional boxers and REAL street fighters.

But for most people, even if skilled in sparring, sparring most likely wouldn't work under the stress, intensity, adrenaline dumps and mental challenges of a REAL WORLD violent street encounter. Remember sparring is a sport that is basically safe and not real fighting.

In our training we avoid whenever possible. We focus on escape and run. If cornered and under attack, we use well placed center-line, eyes, nose, ears and throat rapid fire attacks. Specialized drills teach us to make these responses automatic. Fear is good and actually prepares us for fight of flight. The drills embed in our "mind to muscle" memory connection and will take over with enough practice. But remember, You must practice as recommended by this site.

Also know, we don't wrestle around on the ground. We avoid the ground and treat it as if always a broken glass riddled, asphalted hard street, ally, parking lot or sidewalk, not mats or a smooth floor. The real world doesn't have mats! That's sport.

It has been said (mostly by those who are promoting grappling systems and videos) that most street fights go to the ground. What is this based on? Maybe true in the case of untrained drunkards falling around bar stools and chairs in a dimly lit bar or not life-threatening backyard "fights", wrestling and horse playing or even the wrestling-based UFC type SPORTS.

We don't teach you to fight knives (a.k.a) stupid and possible suicide. Read about knife reality: http://selfdefensetips.info/Knives

I don't know about you, but most street fights, including bar fights and even road rage fights I have seen are over in about ten or fifteen seconds, usually the person with the fastest and the most attacks wins.

Note: For Professionals in Law enforcement and Security, when dealing with a resisting "perp" you will in some cases go down trying to wrestle the handcuffs on him. But if you have advanced enough training, this will be a rare event. If you often fall or it takes 2 or more officers to subdue a "perp", you should seriously consider your training tactics and skills. Some of kung fu's Chin' na ( Seize and Control) tactics I have picked up over the years working and studying in both Asia and America, I have put together in a very good program aimed at professional enhancement: Pro-S.A.C.T.˙® (Pro.fessional- S.eize and C.ontrol T.actics ). Now available in Japan, Singapore and Seminars on Demand in America. A special Professional section will be added to this website in the future with live feeds and videos

In the event of an unavoidable ground altercation, such as an ambush or violent rape attempt, because of the dangerous surface of the street and the great potential for injury, we treat this as a life threatening event. We train to respond rapidly and intensely with strategically placed savage-like bites, choke-outs, well placed and delivered eye gouges, jugular ripping and more. ( Basically we bite, scratch, rip, gouge and go "Primal-ape" on the opponent).

Additionally, many styles base their training on unrealistic partners and responses. You must realize that most committed attackers are charged, and if not high on drugs or alcohol, they are high on endorphins. So, pain-inducing techniques, such as a pinch, slap or punch may persuade your sober training partner, but most likely would have little affect on a "high" street attacker.

That being said, you need to attack the "Everyman" targets that cause a physiological response in addition to pain. Such as a eye gouge can disorient, a cuffed-palm ear strike can disturb equilibrium and a skilled foot sweep can take balance.
Remember, don't base a technique on pain, but on a trauma or shock that relates to the body's natural dismay at being traumatized. It has nothing to do with how tough you are... an inverted finger, a thought provoking throat punch or a finger to the eye may stop the opponent in his tracks due to physiological responses outside his control.

This website's style of instructing will be for the busy lifestyle. The average working man or woman that lives in a time constraining society. Many of us.

Not for those looking for sport, or confusing a martial art that is disguised as self defense, but in actuality a sport, sometimes unknowingly even by the instructor.

We teach from a philosophy that was introduced to our founder nearly 20 years ago. Since then, we have used this philosophy as the foundation of all of our principles, tactics and techniques. We have been fortunate to have law enforcement, security, corrections officers, military and average folks that were our students, successfully use these skills in the real world.

We only use proven techniques and not "theory" or "cool" looking techniques that may work in a controlled setting with a willing partner, but not likely under the stress of a real world street encounter.

These skills are based on a scientific study of self-defense. We focus on reflexes and comfortable, natural body movement to quickly end a violent attack. These skills are derived from ancient martial arts techniques and modern police and military methods that are functional and appropriate in today's world.

The techniques shown on this website are from pragmatic systems of self defense. All angles and positioning are specifically designed for maximum speed, control and simplicity in defense or counter attack.
